Interpreting in Mental Health Settings Saturday, March 7th, 2009 Presenter: Alison Beckman, Center for Victims of Torture Interpreting in mental health settings poses unique challenges for the interpreter. Many individuals who see a mental health professional have experienced trauma. Some multinational clients have experienced war trauma or torture in their home country. Others are affected by the trauma of leaving one’s home country and adjusting to a sometimes unfriendly climate. Some may have experienced family violence or sexual violence. Interpreters perform an essential role in the therapeutic triangle in a mental health setting. The process of interpreting provides a unique opportunity to model and rebuild relationships, connection and respect. Interpreting for clients who have experienced trauma is a taxing endeavor that can affect the interpreter’s perspective of the world, relationships, boundaries, and behaviors. This training will explore ways in which interpreters are affected by the work as well as explore ways to minimize secondary trauma.
