Transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)

Presenter:  Tara Gibbs

Interpreters must frequently write down unfamiliar or unrecognizable words, such as names of people, streets, or cities.  The International Phonetic Alphabet is a means of transcribing the sounds accurately so you can reproduce the words again.  This four session class will introduce you to the International Phonetic Alphabet.  During the first session, participants will practice recognizing and matching IPA symbols with their sounds.  Participants will also practice reading and understanding vowel space graphs and the consonant place and manner of articulation table.  During the second session, participants will practice recognizing transcriptions of familiar words and phrases, as well as transcribing at their own pace.  During the third session, students will practice transcribing words and phrases at a faster pace.  During the final session, students will practice identifying unknown words and names in a natural context and transcribing these.
